Originally the site of "Versöhnungskirche" (Church of Reconciliation) consecrated in 1894 this church became an annoyance to the former German Democratic republic (GDR / DDR). It was right at the Berlin Wall site at Bernauer Streets. The church itself became a refuge for opponents of the regime. It stood alone, as surrounding buildings had been destroyed, in the "Death Strip" were GDR guards could and would shoot people trying to cross the border without permission...
